Bayo, Why Are You So Priceeeeey?

on

I really wanted this Bayo scalloped, gray top.

Although it was a little big for me (says the BF) and that they don't have my size anymore, I still wanted to get it and just have it altered. BUT, when I checked the tag, it there was no way I'm cashing out P990ish for this. I would rather add a few more hundred pesos and get something from Mango/Zara. I kinda hated myself because I wanted to support Filipino brands. However, the quality of this Bayo top wasn't worth the tag at all.

I ended up buying the jeans instead. It had a thick and sturdy fabric with a good price to boot. And they had it in a size that fits me.

I'm not sure why I dropped by the store that day (I usually don't kasi. Maybe because this top caught my eye and I wanted to look like a mermaid for a change). I only buy Bayo goodies during their 50% OFF sale events. I feel that the store's putting on the REAL price tags on these days.

The Old Spaghetti House Review

When we went out for our monthsary a couple of days ago, we were caught in a web of unfortunate events. Talk about tough luck. Amici's Cara Mia Mango Jubilee must've been the only saving grace that day (and a Motorola Defy, pala). Was it a horror story at The Old Spaghetti House SM North for us? Let's see...

As Lemony Snicketts Would Write It

First off, we were bypassed at a gas station after waiting in line for half an hour. Then, we almost got hit by a car who chose to ignore the 'right-of-way' rule. After so, we spent hours looking for parking at the mall and when we found our luck, another motorist unethically parked his ass over 'our space' as we made way for the outgoing vehicle.

The most unforgivable event must've been snacking on spaghetti w/ meatballs + lasagna at The Old Spaghetti House. We had high hopes for this Italian joint but we left the place VERY disappointed. It started with the oily onion rings "appetizer" (that was served along with the main dishes, would you believe! eh, appetizer nga eh, sana inuna at pinatagal ng onti yung pag serve ng spag and lasagna).

Onion Rings, 110PHP. Crispy, but majority of the onions are of poor quality. Yung tipong tinatapon mo sa sibuyas kasi makunat na. Not to mention it's too oily. Made me wish for a Carl's Jr onion rings tuloy

The TOSH Horror Story

Spag's the boyfie's fave and lasagna's mine. Honestly, my dog Maxx's R.A.W. diet (consists of beef+veggies) must've tasted better than the meatballs we dug into. Ulk. Parang dogfood (sorry Maxx, no offense meant)! And the lasagna wasn't superb at all. It may have had that junky flavor I wanted, but it was too easy for me to tell twas prepared several days (or weeks! eep!) ago. I can already imagine how it got cryofreezed over time and was just revived c/o the good old microwave.

Spaghetti w/ meatballs. 150PHP. Noodles and sauce were okay. The meatballs?
Buti nalang al dente yung noodles at mapula yung sauce!

We thought of ordering dessert afterwards. When we decided not to, it was perhaps the first rewarding move that day. Second rewarding move was heading to Amici (which was beside The Old Spaghetti House) to order our cara mia gelato ice cream. Third was probably going home with a Motorola Defy. Ooohlala.

Huge Lasagna, ~160PHP. I like the burst of flavour and the junky cheesey taste. If only it was served fresh. It may be huge but half of it went to Maxx's guts anyway.

Happy Ever After

It may have been a bad start for a special day but it's all good that ice cream + android phone erased all that! Am I going back to The Old Spaghetti House? I actually like the interior --- it's so clean, homey and cozy; however, I went there to grab my fave Italian dishes (and these meals are relatively easy to whip, right?), got out disappointed, so, I'm not going back. Good thing we spent no more than 500 bucks (~$12) for the unsatisfactory food.

Recommendation

This place does not serve freshly-baked lasagna and spaghetti with meatballs all the time. If you're not a meatball/lasagna-lover, by all means, go try their other dishes. They actually have superb food prices, attentive and friendly staff & crew, and a very pleasant atmosphere inside the resto. However, if you love the stuff we ordered above, then you're on the road to wasting some few hundred pesos on The Old Spaghetti House, SM North. Getting what we paid for, you say? Nah, we got LESS of the cheap amount we shelled out when we ordered that weird triumvirate.

Soap and Glory Moisturizers On My Wishlist

After learning that my current fave, Clinique moisture surge is not enough as a moisturizer per se (it's more of a sleeping pack--- the ones you put on top of a moisturizer to make it work optimally), i'm hunting for a replacement to my Clinique moisturizing gel. Perhaps, Soap and Glory might help.
(photos and product info below collected from boots.com and soapandglory.com)

Clothstruck: Nancy Z

Happy Sunday, everyone! Nancy Zhang pioneers The Beauty Bin's new series called, 'Clothstruck', a chain of fashion posts dedicated to the fashionable people I adore.

If you frequent Lookbook, you might agree with me that Nancy Z is probably among the site's hot tickets. I love her because she inspires me to draw despite the fact that art is my weakest point and that I've always thought of myself unfit to sketch. I adore her style and her lovely illustrations:

She restyles the H&M dress seen in the first photo above with a less
chunkier necklace + sans the trench coat

Some of her looks that are wearable in our country's kind of weather are:

Don't you just wanna pick up that pen and sketch? Nancy Z is such an adorable artist in my opinion. She currently has 180ish looks on Lookbook that you may want to check out further.

Skin Update: Going Bare Because I'm Doing Much Better

on , ,

Some signs that tell you your skin is improving, apart from being complemented by others, are being able to get out of the house bare-faced and being confident about having your picture taken even without makeup.

My macho pitbull, Maxx, wearing my laboratory glasses

I'm now able to go out of the house (to review school, to my home-care patients, and for errands) without having to put powder on! I must confess that I never dared step out of the house without dusting powder on my face.

Also, I no longer frown at the camera if I'm not wearing my thick liquid foundation. I worry less about how I'd look like in photos without all that heavy makeup.

Maxx took up acting skills some few months back
he's waaay better than local actor, Aljur Abrenica (sorry, fans)

Again, my skin is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from perfect. But I'm loving the big improvements it has achieved to-date. Good skincare line + a good derma = better skin!

Skincare products I use:

AM: Acne Soap (from derma)
      : Clinique Toner 2
: Hamilton or Lab 46 sunblocks (used interchangeably depending on how oily my skin is; Lab 46 not              recommended o dry-skin days)

PM: Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil (on commute days or if makeup was worn) OR kojic soap (from derma)
: I alternate Pond's Cold Cream to make sure I don't finish up my Shu Oil too fast (haha, I still don't have anyone to buy for me from Duty Free)
: Local Obagi every other night (glowing solution>retinoic acid gel alternated with glycolic cream>brightening cream
: Clinique Turnaround concentrate on non-Obagi nights
: Acne lotion, spot treatment, if pimples come up

Frequency of Derma Visit: from twice a month ---> bi-/tri-monthly visits :)

Improvements: skin clarity, texture and tone; pore size (not dramatic though); post-acne marks/blemishes; acne scars are present but their discoloration has diminished hugely therefore seem invisible and shallow; occurence of cystic pimples on the Tzone and cheeks; amount of oil on the face (I shifted from Clinique toner 3 to 2)

Points of Improvement: complete removal of acne scarring that becomes obvious under certain lightings

Why My Problem Skin Needs The Clarisonic Mia

on ,

If I were to invest on a skincare tool this year, it'll be on the Clarisonic Mia. I've snubbed this beauty gadget during the height of its raves and I  absolutely regret doing that.

Clarisonic Mia Turquiose, $149

My problem skin arises from its abnormal exfoliation rate. My face's dead skin cells slough off rather slowly which causes excess oil and dirt to be trapped. I badly need a good exfoliating tool apart from my favorite St. Ives apricot bright skin scrub. Clarisonic Mia is among the best investments for maintaining clearer and better skin, in my opinion.

Makeupalley has high ratings for this tool (4.5/5 from 323 reviewers) that's why my heart sank deeper than the Titanic did when I lost the slot to buy it. A local reseller was selling it for a low ~$100 (P4500) since she hoarded during some sale, i think. *hits head on the wall* Most resellers have the Mia for P6500+. I could've saved P2000! :(

There are these so-called affordable dupes out there but most of those who tried both the Mia and the conning exfoliator still preferred the original.

So out of frustration, I got myself a pseudo Mia. Wallet damage? LOL, P40 (less than a dollar). I am just utterly disappointed that I missed getting this baby at $100.

My favorite color is blue but I don't mind getting the limited edition, Mia Hope (this sold out like hot pancakes, though).

Oh Clarisonic Mia, when will you be mine?

Obagi Blue Peel

on ,

I am getting more and more interested with the Obagi Blue Peel. Once I have my finances on greater heights (and the strength to accept that I will be literally blue for a day or two), I will absolutely try this out!

Thanks to Ria (*waves hi*) who asked me 'bout this chemical peel procedure:

What is the Obagi Blue Peel?

This treatment uses a low concentration of chemical trichloroacetic acid (TCA) mixed with a special Obagi blue base to slow down penetration. Blue Peel treatment allows your doctor to monitor the appropriate depth of peel to effectively remove the thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin from the face or other parts of the body. Dead skin cells are replaced with healthier ones, allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface.

This treatment best addresses sun-damaged skin, wrinkles, large pores, age spots and hyperpigmentation.

Obagi Blue Peel can be performed on the neck, chest, hands, back, arms and legs.

How will the treatment go about?

Application of the blue peel takes about 20mins depending on the number of coats deemed necessary by your doctor. You will experience a mild burning sensation that lasts 2-3mins (a fan can minimize the uncomfortable sensation). Immediately after the procedure, a bluish tint remains on your skin which will usually wash off in 12 to 24 hours.

How long is the recovery period?

You will be experiencing light swelling and your skin will begin to peel within 2-3 days. The peeling will continue over the next several days and should be healed in an average of 7-10 days.

For lighter, exfoliative Obagi Blue Peel, healing is completed in 3-6 days.

How will my skin look after recovery/healing?

You will immediately notice the dramatic results of your newly improved complexion after the peeling process. Your skin's appearance will continue to improve for the next 4-6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother and more youthful-looking.

Can I apply makeup after the treatment?

To best aid in the recovery process, makeup should only be applied after the skin completely heals.

How frequently do I need this treatment?

Depending on your goals and skin condition, your derma will tell you the number of peels necessary. In most cases, 1-3 Blue Peels can achieve dramatic improvement in many skin problems. The peels can be performed in 6- to 8-week intervals until your desired goals are reached.

TCA vs Obagi Blue Peel

Essentially, these two have similar, coveted effects on the skin. They pretty much have the same length of downtime (~1 week).  Depending on your budget, you can choose the TCA peeling if you are running quite low on the dough but still want to maintain a radiant, youthful skin.

The Obagi Peel will be very ideal for those who find TCA peel treatment too strong for their sensitive skin. This procedure also decreases the risk for burns (which is rather high with TCA).

Another point of difference is the treatment interval. TCA is designed to be applied monthly/bi-monthly, while the blue peel is performed every 6-8 weeks.

How expensive is the Obagi Blue Peel?

My derma, Doc Six Foronda, charges P7,500 (~$170) per session. House of Obagi offers Blue Peel treatment at P10,080 (~$220) per session.

(my derma did not recommend the obagi blue peel for my skin though. my religious bi-monthly TCA sessions with her were already enough to address my uneven skin tone, rough-looking skin and pimple marks)

Don't you just get excited when you learn about solutions for your imperfect skin? I'll be trying out the scar solution from Switzerland, Hiruscar, which is used to help reduce scars caused by acne, surgery, and accidents.

I've read a couple of reviews (here and here) on how miraculously this scar gel worked for them and now it's time to see if this stuff works for my acne marks and accident wounds!

Hiruscar, P852 (~$19), 20g @ selected Mercury and South Star Drugstores
also comes in a 5g tube, P 319

3 things to love about this product even before trying it out:

1. Hiruscar addresses both hypertrophic and atrophic scars. Reports have shown that treated scars experienced 93% improvement.

2. Its ingredients:

3. Hiruscar is safe and effective.

My experiment with the product begins on the 15th. I will be posting if Hiruscar gets the Beauty Bin's stamp of approval in prettifying the skin, so stay tuned!

Finally, a second NOTD entry after the controversial snake+nail polish post. Okay, no snakes for now so that I don't scare anybody :) Today, I'm wearing 2 coats of Milani Nail Lacquer in 52 Sassy Brassy sponged with Caronia African Plum near the tips.

What I did:
1. Bobbie Base Coat
2. Milani Nail Lacquer in Sassy Brassy, 52 (bought at ebay.ph for ~P40)
3. sponged Caronia African Plum on the upper third of the nail
4. swiped Caronia African Plum up to the nail tips to blend the sponged-look
5. Bobbie Top Coat
6. Caronia Qwik Dry

Taking a closer look at it, here are photos of the nails, indoors and outdoors (+ camera flash):

I wonder who wants another NOTD with snakes.... enjoy the weekend, everyone!

20% Off On All Guerlain Products @ Rustan's Makati

If you are a sucker for Guerlain, this Friday's the best time to stock up on your essentials! Guerlain will be holding its Pocket Workshop from 10AM till 7PM at Rustan's Makati.

20% Off on all products including fragrance and skincare.

And don't forget the Forever 21 Makati grand opening happening on that day, too! To add to that, I understand that the first 250 customers who spend at least P2,500 get a P500 voucher. However, Forever 21 simply states that they'll be handing out the said vouchers to the first 250 in line. Now I'm confused. On tricia gosingtian's blog, it states:
Forever 21 will be giving P500 vouchers (with a minimum spend of P2,500) to the first 250 to line up on April 8 when Forever 21 at SM Makati opens.
Tricia is among the brand's ambassador. Come on, bakit may minimum purchase pa? sa totoo lang, ang labo nung promo na yun ah. dapat: P500 voucher for the first 250 customers, period.)

Gates open at 10AM, but I strongly suggest you come by at 8AM. Seryoso. I was there during the Forever 21 Megamall grand opening at 10AM and I was approx customer #500ish. Seryoso ulit.

And please, don't spend all that moolah because the Big Outlet Sale (splurge on makeups and fashion articles!) happens on the 15th and you would want to add a couple of bucks to that Pay-day cash, right?

I felt like I were a kid when I went to Shopwise Commonwealth a few days back! I got myself a colorful Dymo embossing label that has 3 cartridges for 3 types of scripts: caps, lower cases and cursives!

photo stolen from my tumblr account

I love the lower case cartridge since it has a heart and star symbol! :)

It only costs P225 (~$6) and it performs pretty awesome! To my surprise, I saw the same embossing label by Dymo being sold 5x higher than what I paid for at a shopping page!

It's funny I got this chic and pretty gadget at a supermarket. I love my Dymo embossing label and  lately, I've been putting labels on every surface I see!

Found a very interesting tool to clean the nose area from future painful breakouts! Goodbye blackheads and whiteheads!

nasal comedone removal is now a specific part of my skincare regimen!

What I love:

outrageously cheap @ P30+
travel size
bristles go gently on the skin
easy to clean; but may need to disposed of after several uses since there is no way of sterilizing it

Blackhead Remover, Ever Gotesco Beauty Section, ~P 30 (less than a dollar)

I love how fresh my nose area feels after using this (+my cleanser). Not sure if I'm getting a placebo cleaning, though. Will be able to tell probably after a month. So far, I love using it every other day!

a tiny bluish purple beauty tool made of flexible plastic

haha, this is absolutely cool!

Do you hate blackheads growing on the nose, too? How do you make sure that area is all clean? Would love to know!
